I, For One, Etc. of the Day: Willow Garage recently held a competition in which participants were asked to get its PR2 robot to “do something cool, funny, or useful.” First place was claimed by the “Sockification” team from UC Berkeley who managed to teach the PR2 to sort socks.

Nao, developed by a European research team, models the first years of life and can form bonds with the people he meets.

When Nao is sad, he hunches his shoulders forward and looks down. When he’s happy, he raises his arms, angling for a hug. When frightened, Naohe cowers, and he stays like that until he is soothed with some gentle strokes on his head.

Fucking Great. It’s hard enough coping with our own and other peoples emotions we’ll now have to coddle robots feelings too? I thought the whole point of robots was to have something do our bidding without the whole rig-amoral of dealing with how they feel about it.

Nao: A Robot Deception Expert

I don’t know the scientific reason behind a creating a robot capable of detecting human emotion. I don’t. I can tell you that any robot who knows when we are happy and when we are terrified for our lives is not worth building.

Nao is able to detect human emotions through a series of non-verbal “clues”, such as body-language and facial expressions, and becomes more adept at reading a person’s mood through prolonged interaction.

This understanding, along with a set of basic rules about what is “good” and “bad” for it, allow the robot to indicate whether it is “sad” or “happy”.

If that wasn’t bad enough, it can detect, pick up, and move objects that get in its way when it’s walking and it can stand up by itself after it’s been knocked over. It can also communicate with other Nao robots via infrared, wifi and voice.

This robot is going to kill us. It’s going to feign emotion and when it detects that we are at ease with it, it will strike.
